The life of Dr. Isaiah L. White, Sr. is an extraordinary tale of resilience, resolve, and tenacity. During his formative years as a student, he encountered bullying and faced discouragement from teachers who doubted his potential. Additionally, he grappled with various learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, which necessitated his enrollment in special education programs throughout his academic journey.
Dr. White openly shares his experiences within the realm of public schooling in his recently published book, titled "In A Class Called Special." In this literary work, he candidly discusses his disabilities, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, audio processing disorder, visual impairment, comprehension weaknesses, and numerous others. Furthermore, he delves into the manifestation of his frustration through disruptive behavior, resulting in frequent in-school and out-of-school suspensions. When not suspended, he found himself serving detentions or lunch detentions, and he was expelled multiple times from different educational institutions.
Despite these adversities, Dr. White consistently strived to adhere to the principles of academic integrity. He reveals that upon graduating from high school, he possessed a seventh-grade level of proficiency in certain subjects and a fifth-grade level in others. During his college years, he encountered significant challenges, having to retake remedial math courses twelve times and being enrolled in remedial classes for the initial years. Moreover, he faced academic probation and suspension. Following the completion of his bachelor's degree, he sought advice regarding accommodations due to his difficulties in college. However, upon receiving the results of his reevaluation, the psychologist advised him to cease pursuing further education, asserting that his brain's capacity could not extend beyond a bachelor's degree. The psychologist also conveyed that Dr. White had achieved remarkable success and should be content with his accomplishments in life, encouraging him to explore alternative paths.
Nevertheless, Dr. White refused to be deterred by these setbacks and instead propelled himself towards excellence. Through unwavering determination, his grade point average gradually improved, ultimately leading to the attainment of his degrees. During his time in community college, he achieved a GPA of 2.3.
