The life of Dr. Isaiah L. White, Sr. is an extraordinary tale of resilience, determination, and persistence. As a young student, he faced relentless bullying and discouragement from teachers who doubted his potential. Additionally, he grappled with various learning disabilities, including dyslexia, which led him to spend most of his academic years in special education. Despite these immense challenges, he recently achieved a remarkable milestone by earning a Doctorate degree from Wilmington University in New Castle, Delaware.
Dr. White openly shares his educational journey in public schools, shedding light on his experiences in his newly published book titled "In A Class Called Special." Within its pages, he candidly discusses his disabilities, such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, audio processing disorder, visual impairment, comprehension weaknesses, and many others. Furthermore, he delves into how his frustration with academic struggles manifested in his behavior, resulting in numerous in-school and out-of-school suspensions. He admits to being expelled multiple times from different schools. He also sheds light on his struggles with suicidal thoughts, of overcoming bullying, bravely discusses the traumatic experiences of being molested by three different individuals from the ages of 3 to 12.
However, Dr. White never surrendered to adversity. Despite graduating from high school with a 7th-grade level in some subjects and a 5th-grade level in others, he persevered. During his college years, he faced the daunting task of retaking remedial math a staggering 12 times and found himself enrolled in remedial classes for the initial years. He also experienced academic probation and suspension.
Nevertheless, his unwavering determination propelled him forward. Over time, his grade point average improved, and he successfully obtained his degrees. In community college, he achieved a GPA of 2.3. He earned his Bachelor's degree with a 2.9 GPA, followed by his Master's degree with a 3.0 GPA. Finally, in May 2019, he proudly graduated with a Doctorate degree in education, boasting an impressive 3.67 GPA.
